Exchange Building - The Home of ERE History of the Exchange Building in Breckenridge.
Built in 1880, the Exchange Building originally housed the Bank of Breckenridge, but because of poor banking practices the bank was closed in 1886. The Swiss born George and Peter Engle purchased the failing bank and reopened it as the Engle Bros Exchange Bank in 1888. The brothers, who were originally saloon owners, traded in their beer barrels for safety deposit boxes and ran the Exchange building from 1900-1936. Gold Bricks up to 1,000 ounces arrived here to await guarded rail transport to Denver. Mrs. Gertrude Engle, a former Montezuma school-marm, worked in the bank and cared for her family upstairs.
William H. Briggle came from Ohio to Breckenridge to be the bank's head cashier. Briggle ran for county treasurer in 1906 and was defeated, however, at the time of his death in October 1924 he was a country commissioner. Briggle was one of the chairmen of the courthouse dedication party.
