Open space values have been set up to protect the Land of Summit County, its mountain character, and the impact from future developments. This picturesque mountain environment, offers spectacular views, pristine air and water quality and a diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The Open Space and trails of Summit County work to preserve these precious environmental resources.
Quality of Life Open space enriches the community and enhances the quality of life for those living here. Much of this land is already protected in Summit County because it is part of the Arapaho National Forest. Citizens recognize the need to care for wildlife habitat area, backcountry access and prominent view corridors throughout the county.

Open Space Protected The towns of Summit County have worked to protect there open space areas by adopting a Comprehensive Plan that outlines the need keep open space and the qualities that they give protected. A real estate property tax is used to fund the protection / acquisition of open space in Summit County as well as established a Open Space Advisory Council.

Open Space Fund The county works with landowners to determine fair market value for the property and makes sure funds are used efficiently and fairly while compensating landowners for their property. The county works with the U.S. Forest Service to protect open space properties and leverages the Open Space Fund.

Open Space Criteria The Open Space has developed Open Space Selection Criteria based on the important issues that affect the use of open space. Access to open space land with trails, trailheads and public areas is a significant criterion. The land must be used to contribute to the past with agricultural lands, ranching areas, and historical areas. The urban area and rural mountain quality much reflect and buffer the local landscape. Land must be able to have recreational applications that do not require intensive maintenance. Any land with unique value shall be protected from use. View Corridors must be visible by residents and visitors to maintain the rural appearance of Summit County.
